There are hundreds of different styles of resumes, and picking one you feel best represents you is ultimately what you should choose. There are, however, a few key content points to consider because studies have shown you have less than 10 seconds to grab a recruiter’s attention. Suggestions to make the most of your opportunity:
✓ Your resume should paint a picture of who you are and what you have accomplished at each position.
✓ The reader should be able to visualize your job.
✓ Whenever possible, include quantifiers in your resume. Some obvious ones include the dollar budget of your project, the amount of savings your idea provided to the company, or perhaps the size of the audience which you are serving. Quantifiers help you stand out against other applicants and communicate to the hiring manager that you understand the outcomes of your work and helps you express the value you bring to the organization.
✓ Avoid unnecessary lead in phrases such as “Experience in”, “Familiar with”, etc. If you actually have experience in a particular area, say what you did but not with space-wasting phrases.
✓ No matter how badly you want to include every aspect of every job you have had, brevity is key when it comes to resume writing. Demonstrate that you can communicate effectively by editing and submitting only the most valuable aspects of your current and past jobs.
✓ Reduce position details the further back you go into your previous jobs. Edit!
✓ Include a brief Career Summary, but remember that every aspect of your summary also needs to be listed in your experience.
✓ If you are applying for a technical position, include a Technical Skills Summary so a recruiter can quickly see your specialty areas. Also include these skills used in a summary under each position so that the recruiter knows when and where you used each skill.
